100 Years of Promoting Freedom – the History of PEN International.
PEN International was founded in 1921. It affirms that “literature knows no frontiers and must remain common currency among people in spite of international upheavals’. It works to defend literature of all types, including journalism, against the many threats to survival posed by the modern world. Jennifer Clement, the Mexican-American author who has just completed two terms as President of PEN, will review its successes over its first century with particular reference to Mexico. She will then outline the real challenges it faces during the next few years, drawing on her experience of PEN Mexico from 2009 to 2012.
The event builds on the foundations laid by the British Mexican Society’s highly acclaimed event earlier this year entitled “they are killing us: Why are journalists still dying in Mexico?”.
