A Man of Perseverance with John Orbell at the Barings archive
Join us for a special talk by John Orbell on his recent book A Man of Perseverance, which explores the life of George White, a clerk and troubleshooter at Barings. The book focuses in particular on his time in Mexico in 1862–63, when he was sent to recover debts from the Mexican government. Arriving during the French invasion and departing shortly before the arrival of Maximilian, White’s letters to London offer a vivid account of the political and social upheavals of the period, as well as the personalities involved.
George White was also a gifted amateur artist, and the book includes a number of his watercolours, many painted during his time in Mexico, which add a rich visual dimension to his experience.
The event will take place at the Barings archive, where participants will have the opportunity to view original letters sent from Mexico, alongside a collection of these watercolours.
